The End of Dating as We Know It: How DOWN Rewrote the Rules of Connection

When we launched DOWN, the industry was stuck in a “hustle” of euphemisms. Legacy apps were using opaque algorithms to find “soulmates,” while newer players were hiding behind the “friend-finding” label.

I recently spoke with ReadWrite about how we decided to break that mold by simply being honest.

The Innovation: The Three-Way Swipe One of our biggest shifts was moving away from the “Left/Right” binary. We introduced a three-directional architecture:

  • Swipe UP: To DATE (seeking something serious).
  • Swipe DOWN: To HOOKUP (seeking something casual).
  • Swipe LEFT: To pass.

By giving users two “Yes” buckets, we didn’t just add a feature—we removed the risk of awkward miscommunication. It turns out that when you give people the tools to be direct, they take them. Since 2019, our match rate has grown by 500%.
